let’s play response 10/5: LGBT characters

Poison from street fighter -read a very good article on her posted by Karolyn Petit on gamespot a while back, and Cortez from ME3 are the only gay/tranny characters who come to mind; other than Birdo, I don’t think she really counts since she’s not any sort of romantic interest or human for that matter. Personally, I don’t have a problem with characters of different sexualities in games at all, however I often times hate the way they are portrayed. They feel like forced editions in order to appease a broader variety of fans, after watching the EC I was a little touched to see how right the Japanese developers got the characters right. The male example they used wasn’t a stereotype, he was own character that spoke for himself and allowed players to experience his point of view of a conflicted man –not just some homosexual making drama where there isn’t.

With the world being what it is, especially in an incredibly close minded community as the gaming one, homosexual characters are often times taken the wrong way. I don’t feel like they should be the focus, they feel gimmicky “Look at us, we’re progressive because we have homosexuality in our game *cough cough* Mass effect 3 *cough*” Games where you stumble onto a homosexuel/tranny character are a more enriching experience.
